The frequency of eye exams depends on factors like your age, medical history, and any existing vision conditions. As a general guide, adults and children without known eye issues may benefit from a review every one to two years. Individuals with diabetes, a family history of eye conditions, or other risk factors may require more regular assessments. Your optometrist can provide specific advice based on your circumstances.

Please bring your Medicare card, private health fund card (if applicable), and your current glasses or sunglasses. If you wear contact lenses, it’s helpful to know the brand and type. If you have concerns about your eye health, informing your optometrist about any family history of conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration can also assist with your assessment.

Improving eyesight depends on the underlying cause. Your optometrist can assess your vision for conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism and may recommend glasses or contact lenses. In some cases, additional management may be advised for dry eye symptoms, myopia progression, or eye coordination concerns. Any treatment recommendations are based on clinical findings.

Optometrists are university-trained health professionals who provide primary eye care services. This includes eye exams, vision correction, and the diagnosis and management of a range of eye conditions.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialise in eye disease and surgery. They manage more complex or advanced eye conditions and often work alongside optometrists when further treatment is required.

Fitting contact lenses typically involves an initial eye examination to assess suitability and determine the correct prescription. If appropriate, trial lenses are fitted and adjusted based on comfort and vision. You’ll also receive instructions on how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses safely. Follow-up visits may be needed.
