Frequently Asked Questions About Bulk-Billed Eye Tests

See below the most commonly asked questions we receive from our patients daily about bulk-billed eye tests:

How often should I have my eyes tested?

Vision and eye health can change over time. As a general guide, a review every one to two years may be recommended, depending on your age, general health, and risk factors. For children, adults over 65, or those with certain eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or macular changes, more frequent monitoring may be advised based on clinical needs.

Is retinal photography covered?

At Northbridge Optical, retinal photography is included with a comprehensive eye examination at no additional cost. This service is offered as part of our standard clinical assessment to help monitor eye health over time.

What is checked during my eye examination?

Your eye examination may include testing for refractive conditions such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism. We also assess eye health and may perform additional tests depending on your symptoms, history, or risk factors.

When will I receive my results?

Following your eye examination, your optometrist will discuss the findings with you and explain any next steps or recommendations based on your results.

What should I bring to my appointment?
    • Your current glasses – if you wear them, please bring them along so we can assess any changes.

    • Medicare card – if eligible, your exam may be bulk billed under Medicare.

    • Private health fund card – if you have optical cover, you may be able to claim for frames or lenses.

We accept all major health funds including Medibank, Bupa, HCF, NIB, AHM, Teachers Health, and others.

Can I reuse my own frames for new lenses?

Yes, in most cases we can fit new prescription lenses into your existing frames, depending on their condition and compatibility. If you’re unsure, speak with our team and we’ll assess them during your visit.

Will there be any out-of-pocket costs?

Most standard eye examinations can be bulk billed for eligible Medicare cardholders. However, additional services—such as contact lens consultations or certain specialty testing—may attract a separate fee. We’ll let you know beforehand and discuss your options.
