Our optometrists offer glaucoma assessments that may include intraocular pressure testing, visual field screening, and imaging of the optic nerve. These tests help assess risk factors and signs associated with glaucoma. If you hold a valid Medicare card, your consultation may be bulk billed. If further testing or referral is required, your optometrist will discuss the next steps with you.

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerve, which plays a key role in transferring visual information from the retina (at the back of the eye) to the brain. In glaucoma, this nerve may be damaged over time—often without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.
In many cases, peripheral (side) vision may be affected first, which can be difficult to detect without testing. Because early changes are often subtle, regular eye exams may support early identification of signs associated with glaucoma.
Glaucoma is commonly linked to elevated pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), which may place strain on the optic nerve. However, some people may develop glaucoma even when intraocular pressure is within normal limits. For this reason, a full assessment involves more than just a pressure check.
Certain factors may be associated with increased risk of developing glaucoma, including:
- A family history of glaucoma
- Age over 40
- Elevated intraocular pressure
- Diabetes
- Long-term use of steroid medication
- History of eye injury or surgery
- Migraine
- Sleep apnoea
Blood pressure abnormalities (high or low)

Assesses your peripheral (side) vision, which may be affected in the early stages of glaucoma. - Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
